Global research has revealed that 2.6 billion people around the world lack improved sanitation, 800 million lack safe drinking water, and 60 per cent of the earth’s ecosystem services are deteriorating. All these challenges are directly linked to water security.
Sweden’s early investments in water and wastewater treatment technologies have led to the development of a wide range of innovative solutions of all types and sizes, which are being implemented in countries around the world.
Below we present some of the innovative Swedish companies that work to use water more efficiently.
Spowdi
Spowdi was founded in 2016 with a mission to help move and save water, to help small-hold farmers worldwide to generate higher crop yields, lower their operations costs, to be profitable, independent and fossil-free. The Spowdi system is a solution for distributing water and resilient food production. Organic production also contributes to maintaining sustainable agriculture with the use of renewable energy sources. Read more about Spowdi.
Drupps
Drupps has introduced scalable and sustainable atmospheric water that enables companies and organizations to reduce water footprint and secure long-term water supply. Drupps’ concept is a patented technology for the scalable production of water from the atmosphere. It processes ambient air and absorbs its moisture, before extracting it as high-quality water of food-grade purity in a series of steps including distillation. Read more about Drupps.
Orbital systems
Orbital system has developed a recirculating shower system, where up to 90% of the water and 80% of the energy can be saved. The Orbital System shower uses a few litres of water to deliver a luxurious shower experience. In Sweden, the average person uses about 140 litres of water per day, a lot of which comes from personal hygiene use. Orbital’s goal is to decrease this to 20 litres per day. Read more about Orbital.
Retein
Retein uses naturally abundant components and knowledge from several years of research to mimic nature’s outstanding design to harness the power of natural water purification. Energy-efficient desalination of seawater into safe drinking water and sustainable production of ultrapure water are two targeted achievements in Retain’s quest to accommodate everyone’s need for clean water.
