The shipping industry is estimated to represent more than 3 % of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. By 2050, the number is expected to increase to 10 % if no action is taken. Lean Marine offers solutions that can help save fuel and reduce emissions as well as costs.
Solutions that create a difference in the short term are constantly popping up, but more is needed to create a long-term solution with the technology that is available now.
This is where Lean Marine comes in. Lean Marine has set out to reduce the environmental impact of vessel operations. So far, Lean Marine’s systems have been contracted for over 180 vessels, representing more than 45 different ship owners worldwide. This has resulted in 167 million kilos of CO2 being saved per year.
Saving fuel and cutting costs
Lean Marine has developed a propulsion automation system, FuelOpt™, that helps save fuel by enhancing operational efficiency in real-time. With the push of a button at the user-friendly panel on the bridge, ship owners and operators can control the vessel propulsion. Once the command is set on power, speed, fuel consumption, or a combination of these, FuelOpt™ makes sure that the propulsive power is optimised dynamically based on the set values. The system can be installed on any type of vessel, existing or new buildings, and any type of conventional propulsion system both for fixed and controllable pitch propeller. The FuelOpt™ system is estimated to save up to 15 % in fuel and emissions and the return on investment is in most cases possible to be less than a year.
Turning big data into knowledge
What is more, the smart performance management and reporting software Fleet Analytics™ takes the data gathered in the system and from other sources and turns it into knowledge. By using the software, operators and owners get performance insights and reports automatically, reducing workload onboard and ashore. With a better understanding of the vessel performance, it is possible to continuously learn from previous voyages and define how to operate better going further, thus reducing operating costs as well as emissions. By combining this software together with the FuelOpt™ system, another 10 % of emissions can be saved.
