The global plastic waste problem has probably not gone unnoticed by anyone. As the demand for sustainable and durable alternatives is increasing, so is the supply. Biofiber Tech is one of the companies that has emerged as an alternative to fossil plastics and offers a solution made from wood.
The solution is based on modified wood fibres derived from Northern Europe. Wood fibre-based plastics have been around for a long time, but the unique modification from Biofiber Tech makes wood fibres more compatible with plastics. The foundation of the solution is Biofiber Tech’s innovation FibraQ, a material made from wood fibre that can be used in a wide range of products, such as 3D printed furniture, electronics and gym equipment.
How it works
Normal wood fibre composites have decreased flowability, which can lead to uneven filling and packing of the mould cavity. FibraQ is the first product from Biofiber Tech and is a pelletized form of modified wood fibres. The enhanced flowability of FibraQ minimizes the need for customized tooling, meaning that the field of applications where a wood fibre compound can be used is widened.
3D printed Kayak
Biofiber Tech has been part of a Swedish project that, as the first in the world, 3D-printed a full-size kayak in one piece with wood fibre and recycled plastic compound. The kayak is made of recycled plastic that is reinforced with wood fibre from Northern Europe. The breakthrough opens for a competitive production of more sustainable and circular products.
International expansion
In March 2024, Biofiber Tech announced that the company would focus on China as the next market. The choice to focus on China, the world’s leading plastic producer, is a strategic move to create a significant global impact. By introducing sustainable alternatives in China, Biofiber Tech believes that it can significantly reduce reliance on fossil-based plastics and cut carbon emissions to an extent not possible by targeting smaller markets.
