India’s largest airline Indigo has signed a contract with the Swedish cleantech company Altered to install the company’s frugal flushing faucets in its fleet.
After working on the Indian market for a few years, Altered recently landed a breakthrough order. In January, the company signed a contract in New Delhi with India’s largest airline Indigo. The contract means that Altered’s faucets, which reduce water consumption by up to 98 percent, will be installed across Indigo’s entire fleet of over 340 aircraft. Indigo is the world’s first airline to install Altered’s solution.
– Indigo flies Airbus so they have certified our product. We have already received inquiries from three other airlines, including another major carrier in India. Aviation is seen as an environmental culprit, but our attitude has always been that people will not change their lifestyle drastically and then we must make the improvements that are possible in the existing environment to reduce the climate impact, says Johan Nihlén, CEO of Altered.
Tests carried out by Indigo with Altered’s cranes show that the airline will reduce its emissions by 1,300 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year as a result of reduced consumption of water and fuel.
– It is unnecessary for the planes to drag around a lot of water that consumes extra fuel. That a low-cost company like Indigo is leading the way for this investment is perhaps a little surprising, but the fact is that they cannot afford not to do it, says Johan Nihlén.
The contact with Indigo comes as a result of a collaboration between Sweden and India, the India-Sweden Innovations Accelerator. The program is supported by the Swedish Energy Agency and Business Sweden to reduce climate change in India through a transition to renewable energy. Read more about the Innovations Accelerators here.
