By 2025, half of the world’s population will experience water scarcity. Drupps is a Swedish water innovation company helping food and beverage producers to increase water sustainability and security by tapping the atmosphere. The vision is no water scarcity on Earth and to have the UN Sustainable Development Goal 6, clean water and sanitation, come true.
The Swedish company Drupps has introduced scalable and sustainable atmospheric water that enables companies and organisations to reduce water footprint and secure long-term water supply. By processing ambient air and absorbing the moisture, water is extracted and purified.
How it works
The atmosphere holds a lot of water. Just like other natural water sources, it is tapped and refilled continuously. Nature is always striving for balance, so if moisture is extracted, water is evaporated from the Earth’s surface to restore that balance.
The Drupps concept is a unique and patented technology for scalable production of water from the atmosphere. It processes ambient air and absorbs its moisture, before extracting it as high-quality water of food-grade purity in a series of steps including distillation.
Drupps’ absorption technology is significantly more energy-efficient than traditional moisture harvesting which makes its water uniquely cost-efficient to be a viable option for producers.
Drupps’ water comes from the atmosphere, which does not harbour common water pollutants such as heavy metals, bacteria, pesticides, medicine and hormone residues. In addition, Drupps applies a unique series of purification steps that guarantee high-quality water even in tough smog conditions. These steps remove even the smallest airborne particles and organisms, by combining mechanical filtering, running air through liquid and evaporation. As an extra protective post-production layer, the produced water is filtered through active carbon filtering and UV-sterilization.
Moving on to international markets
Founded in 2017, Drupps have made a fast journey forward. In December 2020, the company signed its first contract in South-East Asia, where Drupps will deliver an advanced mobile unit producing distilled-quality water that will be used for verification and testing to the customer. Another deal in the US is about to be announced in the next few days.
But that is not the first international successes that the company has had. In 2019, Drupps signed with sales partners in India, Turkey and the Middle East and the same year the company won the Green Award at the SACCNY Sustainology Summit in New York City for its global impact potential.
Drupps’ concept is scalable, and cost-efficient since energy is saved by not having to transport water long distances via costly pipelines. The solution can be used in places such as cities, on residential and factory rooftops and in both inland and coastal regions. Drupps tailors the solution to different requirements that the customers might have due to factors such as climate conditions and preferred energy type.
