Although more than 70 % of the earth is covered with water, most of the water is not drinkable. Today, one billion people worldwide lack access to safe drinking water. Aquammodate offers a unique, energy-efficient solution to this essential problem.
Most of the world’s water, about 97 %, is salt water. The rest is freshwater, which make up the amount of drinking water worldwide. Pollutants and microplastics make some of this valuable drinking water harmful to humans, animals and nature.
Safe drinking water for all
Aquammodate and its small, but devoted team, is on a mission to change these statistics by offering a technology that purifies contaminated water or wastewater from the industries, at the same time as it has a minimal carbon footprint. Aquammodate also strives to create energy-efficient desalination of seawater into drinking water.
The company was founded a year ago, but the development of the product has been going on since 2013 at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg. During the first year as a company, Aquammodate has been selected as one of the top 20 most promising business ideas in Sweden, been named one of Hello Tomorrow’s “Deep Tech Pioneers” and received the Vinnova grant “Innovative startups step 1”. Needless to say, the company has had a flying start.
– It is truly inspiring to see this amount of attention attracted by our technology already at this stage of prototype development. We are determined to continue along this path in order to accommodate the world’s need for clean water, says Simon Isaksson, CEO at Aquammodate.
How it works
In nature, the cell membrane works like a water filter to reduce the amounts of harmful pollutants entering the cell. Aquammodate uses naturally abundant components and knowledge from several years of research to mimic nature’s outstanding solution. By using the features of the protein aquaporin, Aquammodate’s biobased technology delivers a twofold climate-friendly solution: it purifies the water by using only natural materials, in a way that saves vast amounts of energy.
The lack of access to safe drinking water is a major challenge that people all over the world face, but with Aquammodate’s technology and knowledge, a solution is one step closer.
