Swedish truck maker Scania and battery producer Northvolt have presented an electric battery with a lifetime equivalent to a Scania truck, about 1,5 million kilometres.
The lithium-ion cell is produced with wind and hydropower from the north of Sweden and the carbon footprint is about one-third of the average from an equivalent product.
It was in 2017 when Scania and Northvolt joined forces that the project to develop and commercialize a world-leading battery cell for heavy electric transport started. The companies are now taking new steps in the partnership when the cell is manufactured at the Northvolt Ett gigafactory outside Skellefteå in the north of Sweden.
Later this year, Scania’s new battery factory in Södertälje outside of Stockholm will be inaugurated. The cells will be assembled into the battery pack for electric trucks for heavy transport.
