As the number of electric vehicles continues to grow, so does the demand for more convenient charging solutions. In Gothenburg, Sweden, a project for inductive wireless charging of taxis is now adding its third station, marking another step forward in the city’s ongoing efforts toward sustainable mobility.

The latest installation builds on a successful three-year pilot of the Wireless Charging project, in which 20 electric Volvo XC40 taxis have been charged wirelessly at two different locations in the city. Now, a third station with two ground chargers has been installed outside an exhibition and congress centre, further expanding the network.

A successful trial

Over the initial three-year pilot, the wireless charging technology has proven to be both reliable and well-received by drivers. Moreover, the project is reinforcing Gothenburg’s role in advancing sustainable transport solutions:

– Gothenburg is not just a city, it is an innovation engine and a pioneer in sustainability. We note that wireless charging is attractive to taxi fleets and other carriers in key locations in the city, with great potential to support our city’s climate goal of reducing emissions from the traffic system. We are pleased to promote further collaboration and pleased that an absolute majority of the project’s drivers are keen to continue using this innovative solution, saysPatrik Andersson, CEO, Business Region Gothenburg.

Innovation through partnership

The wireless charging system was developed by InductEV, which is now taking over the operation of all three charging stations. This also marks the launch of the company’s first “charging-as-a-service” offering. Other key partners in the project include Business Region Gothenburg, Cabonline, Göteborg Energi, Vattenfall InCharge, and Volvo Cars.

Part of the Gothenburg Green City Zone

The Wireless Charging project is part of the Gothenburg Green City Zone, an initiative by the City of Gothenburg that is carried out through Business Region Gothenburg, Volvo Cars, and RISE Research Institutes of Sweden. Within this collaborative platform, new technologies and solutions are tested and developed, with the goal of achieving 100% emission-free traffic by 2030.
