To create a better urban life, safety is key. Edeva has created a smart speed bump that is only activated when the speed limit is exceeded. The new speed bump not only reduces speed but creates a better traffic flow, leads to less CO2 emissions and a safer city.

As cities grow and more people need transportation to move around for work and social activities, it becomes increasingly important with safety in traffic. Sweden has worked towards the goal that no one should be killed or injured in traffic since the 1990s by informing the public, collaboration among different actors in society and new technical solutions. The work has been successful and since 2000, the amount killed in traffic has reduced by half.

One of the companies that helps reach the goal is Edeva. By developing new technology with robust, efficient and flexible solutions, Edeva wants to contribute to a sustainable urban future where people feel happy and safe.

Actibump – the smart speed bump

Edeva has created a speed bump that favours drivers that keep the speed limit. When someone is driving too fast, a hatch in the road opens, causing an inconvenience for the driver. If the speed limit is kept, the hatch will not be activated, which reduces the number of stops and starts compared to scenarios with regular speed bumps. This creates a better traffic flow, as well as reduces emissions and increases safety in cities. The innovation also makes it easier for public transport and emergency vehicles to move in the city since the Actibump can be set to not activate for certain vehicles.

This is all due to Edeva live, a smart city platform that handles remote monitoring of the hardware and collects, stores and visualizes data. The system makes it easy for the user to manage the system and to analyse results from all collected data. Besides speed, the system collects real-time data on vehicle type, noise, vibrations and air pollution.

Saving thousands of tons of CO2 emissions

The solution has been proven successful. At Curtin University in Perth, Australia, the average percentage of drivers speeding decreased from 49 % to 14 % in six months. A study made in Malmö showed less wear and tear on the vehicles and a better working environment for the drivers.

Thanks to the better traffic flow, Actibump also leads to a decrease in CO2 emissions. A study that was recently conducted on the efficiency on Actibump showed that when driving on a road with a 40 km/h speed limit, emissions per car could be reduced by 3,31 kg CO2e/year and 49 kg CO2e/year for trucks. This means that over 49 500 tons CO2e/year could be saved only in Sweden when using the Actibump, which is the equivalence of 22 721 petrol cars.

Actibump is now installed in 50 places in Sweden and seven places in Australia. The interest is high and the Actibump will soon be installed in Norway, Holland and France as well as several new installations in Sweden.
