Roam Electric, a Swedish-founded company that produces electric vehicles in Nairobi, Kenya, has recently completed a 6,000-kilometer-long journey on an electric, solar-powered motorcycle.

The journey began in Nairobi and went through the African continent down to Stellenbosch in South Africa through Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia and Botswana. The trip was a collaborative effort between Roam and Stellenbosch University with support from partners such as Sanedi, Scatec, Charlie’s travel and Throttle Pitstop.

The motorcycle’s batteries were charged using solar energy throughout the trip, which marked a significant evaluation of Roam Air’s portable charging systems. A new record was achieved, covering 113 km on a single battery charge. The expedition also showcased Africa’s unique beauty—from Victoria Falls to the Chobe River, where the team camped among hippos and marveled at the continent’s natural wonders.

‍Roam was previously called Opibus and was founded in 2017. Initially focused on converting safari vehicles to electric, Roam has shifted its focus to electric motorcycles and buses for public transport.

In February 2024, Roam received a capital injection of 250 million SEK (21.6 million Euro), which includes a loan guarantee of 100 million SEK from the American government’s development fund, DFC. This funding round was led by Equator Africa, with participation from notable impact and climate funds such as At One Ventures, TES Ventures, Renew Capital, The World We Want, and One Small Planet, along with several private and institutional investors.
