Sweden Sustaintech Venture Day is an event for promoting investments in Swedish growth companies within cleantech. Last week, the Swedish Energy Agency and Cleantech Scandinavia organized the conference for the sixth year in a row. Swedish Cleantech was there to meet the Swedish companies and follow the discussion.
Sweden has a strong ecosystem for startups and is a global leader in cleantech innovation. There is a strong need for meeting places where different forms of capital, such as banks, venture capital, business angels and public funding can work together to support cleantech companies.
The conference’s agenda included, among others, Julia Reinaud from Breakthrough Energy, Thomas Östros from the European Investment Bank (EIB) and Ben Murphy from KIKO Ventures participated in a discussion on how we can mobilize capital to create a Europe with net zero emissions.
They opened the discussion by referring to Mario Draghi’s recently published report, “The Future of European Competitiveness”. The report identifies three key areas for achieving sustainable growth. One of these areas is the phasing out of fossil fuels. This provides an opportunity for Europe to strengthen its competitiveness, especially in the cleantech sector.
Capital meets innovations
Sustaintech Venture Day gives investors the opportunity to meet some of the most fast-growing and promising Swedish cleantech companies and take part in their innovations. 27 selected companies presented their ideas on stage to investors. New for this year was a Cleantech Tour, where the investors could visit seven companies and their test labs.
Support for capital acquisition
The Swedish Energy Agency has been working since 2017 with investment promotion to strengthen Swedish growth and create new jobs. By having Swedish, climate-smart solutions reach out internationally, the agency can contribute to speeding up the transition globally.
For two years, the Swedish Energy Agency has been working with an investment accelerator where companies receive support through the entire capital-raising process – including matching with relevant international investors. Sweden Sustaintech Venture Day is a key event for the Energy Agency to showcase the companies in the accelerator.
– The work we put into applying for the Energy Agency’s investment accelerator has been worth it. The exposure we have received has been very valuable above all for knowing how to position and package our offer, but also how to get out on the market with our offer, says Max Ekengren, CFO at T.Loop.
