Two Swedish companies have announced plans to jointly explore establishing a large-scale production facility for biocarbon and pyrolysis oil in Skellefteå. This initiative would represent a significant step in the industrial green transition.

This joint initiative involves Envigas, a leading cleantech company, and Skellefteå Kraft, one of Sweden’s largest energy producers. Envigas already operates a production facility in the area and aims to scale up its operation through the proposed plant. The production now being investigated would have an annual capacity of over 25,000 tons of biocarbon and 20,000 tons of pyrolysis oil.

Environmental and climate benefits

Biocarbon and pyrolysis oil are derived from residual biomass sourced from the forest and wood industry. These products have the potential to replace fossil coal in industrial applications such as metallurgy and the chemical industry, and could reduce industrial CO₂ emissions by up to 120,000 tons per year.

A strategic collaboration

“We look forward to exploring this opportunity together with Skellefteå Kraft to lay the groundwork for a large-scale expansion of our operations and to contribute further to the transformation of Swedish industry,” says Lars-Gunnar Almryd, CEO of Envigas.

Skellefteå Kraft sees many advantages with the region where they are present:

“With access to renewable energy and biomass, our region offers some of the best conditions globally for establishing industrial clusters that drive the green transition. As an energy company, we can play a key role in enabling transitions across sectors while also leveraging the potential of circular flows,” says Fredrik Jonsson, Head of Business Innovation at Skellefteå Kraft.
